IMD Forecast: Below-Normal Rainfall in India’s Monsoon History

The India Meteorological Department has forecast
below-normal rainfall across India in September 2026, the final month of the
monsoon season. India has already recorded a 14% rainfall deficit from June to
August. The
IMD linked the weak-rainfall outlook partly to strengthening El Niño conditions
in the Pacific Ocean. Lower rainfall could affect agriculture, water resources
and irrigation, increasing pressure on farmers. However,
some parts of northwest, northeast, eastern and southeastern India may still
receive normal or above-normal rainfall.

Tomato Crop Crisis in India

Climate change is affecting tomato farming in India. In 2023, very high temperatures and irregular rainfall damaged tomato crops in Maharashtra. The major example was seen during the extreme heat, irregular rainfall, and changing monsoon patterns, which are damaging tomato crops in several states. In Maharashtra's Pune region, temperatures above 40°C are reducing tomato yields and increasing farming costs. Unexpected heavy rainfall and hailstorms are also damaging tomato crops in many parts of India. Reduced production is causing tomato prices to rise sharply and is affecting both farmers and consumers. This situation is highlighting how climate change is becoming a serious threat to Indian agriculture and food security.

India - Germany Agreement on Wetland Conversation

India and Germany have signed a Joint Declaration of Intent to conserve and wisely use internationally important wetlands. The agreement was signed during the 4th Indo-German Environment Forum (IGEF) in New Delhi.The partnership will strengthen scientific cooperation, knowledge sharing and best practices in wetland management. It is important for protecting biodiversity, improving water security and building climate resilience.

Heavy rains create a flood- like situation in Barrackpore

Heavy monsoon downpours have caused severe waterlogging near the Barrackpore railway station, submerging key roads and disrupting daily commutes.Knee-deep rainwater accumulated near the station area, making pedestrian movement and vehicular traffic extremely difficult. Local commuters faced major delays as autorickshaws and buses struggled to navigate the flooded streets. Stagnant water also raised concerns over the local drainage system's capacity during peak monsoon spells. Residents and daily passengers have urged the municipal authorities to clear blocked drains and take urgent action.

India-France Expand Cooperation in Space and Emerging Technologies

India and France are strengthening their cooperation space, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and emerging technologies. In 2026, both countries are focusing on innovation, research and advanced technology as part of the India - France Year of Innovation. The two countries are also working working together through their space agencies, ISRO and CNES, on areas such as Earth observation, human spaceflight and space exploration. India and France have also agreed to deepen cooperation in AI, digital science and other new technologies.The growing partnership shows India's increasing role in international scientific cooperation and technology development. It can create new opportunities for research, innovation and collaboration between Indian and French institutions.
