Kolkata Durga Puja Committees to Display Anti-Ragging Messages Near Pandals

In a Remarkable Social Responsibility Move, Puja Organizers Promote Anti-Ragging Awareness During Durga Puja Festivities

No ragging this year

In a remarkable display of social responsibility, an umbrella association representing Durga Puja committees in Kolkata has called upon its members to prominently showcase anti-ragging messages adjacent to pandals during the upcoming late October festival. This initiative responds to the critical issue of ragging, a deeply concerning social problem with grave consequences. The directive encourages puja organizers to erect anti-ragging posters not only condemning this reprehensible act but also elucidating its legal ramifications. Moreover, these posters will prominently feature the state government's anti-ragging helpline number (1800-345-5678), which was launched following the tragic incident at Jadavpur University on August 10, 2023.

Ragging Helpline Posters

This proactive step involves various stakeholders, including the Forum for Durgotsab representatives, senior functionaries, and club secretaries responsible for organizing different Durga Puja pandals. For instance, at Hatibagan Sarbojanin, which recently organized a khuti puja, the secretary plans to display anti-ragging banners and posters as part of their social responsibility commitment. Meanwhile, at Kashi Bose Lane Durga Puja Samity, where the central theme revolves around "women empowerment," the organizers are resolute in their plans to launch an extensive anti-ragging awareness campaign. Their strategy encompasses multiple posters, banners, and even a dedicated kiosk, all dedicated to anti-ragging advocacy.

Themes to protest against ragging

Similarly, Samaj Sebi Sangha on Lake View Road intends to allocate separate kiosks and audio-visual presentations to convey anti-ragging messages. In addition to addressing the issue of ragging, they aim to shed light on another social menace: acid attacks on women. Their messaging extends to highlighting that complainants utilizing the helpline will remain anonymous, and immediate actions will be taken, assuring support and protection for those who speak up.

All set for Pujo 2023

The overarching objective of this campaign is to motivate the younger generation not only to witness but also to actively combat ragging, thereby fostering a safer environment. Ashoke Dey, joint secretary of the Durga Puja organizing committee at Mudiali Club, underscores the social responsibility behind this endeavor. Their campaign endeavours to illuminate the dire consequences for those involved in ragging incidents, including suspensions, expulsions, blacklisting, and the potential ruination of careers. In essence, these puja committees perceive this initiative as a vital contribution to the larger societal well-being, intertwining tradition with contemporary issues, and reinforcing the spirit of Durga Puja as a celebration of harmony and responsibility.
