Sowing Success

Our student conducted an interview with a farmer, Mr. Mainak Das, to learn more about his experiences and the challenges he faces in agricultural practices.

Mr. Manik Das, your farming practices are quite diverse, as I can see. Can you tell us more about your farm?

Manik Das: Yes, of course, on my 5-acre land, I devote 3 acres to paddy cultivation, 2 acres to sugarcane, and the remaining area to fish farming. Diversification has been the key to my success!

So, what role have modern farming techniques played in your success?

Manik Das: I've learned much from agricultural scientists, and adopting modern techniques has reduced my input costs effectively. One of the key changes I have made was switching to low-tillage farming; this technique has helped manage both time and money. Initially, I had very little knowledge about farming, but over time, my interest grew, and I now actively contribute to my father’s farm. My wife and I experiment with different types of crops, and if they grow, we gain knowledge from the experience. If it fails, we keep trying.

Can you tell us more about this new technique of sugarcane cultivation method?

Manik Das: Traditionally, planting sugarcane was labor-intensive and costly. So, I have adopted this new method where I use only the buds of sugarcane stalks, sprouting them in soil and straw before transplanting them to the field. This method has reduced my planting costs by 80% and increased production by 25-30%.

That's remarkable! What advice would you give to other farmers to remain profitable in today's agricultural landscape?

Manik Das: In order to remain profitable, farmers must integrate modern techniques with traditional methods. I have adopted the practice of drip irrigation, which has been a game-changer for me. Also, I have transitioned to a hybrid approach of using a mix of chemical and organic fertilizers.

How do you manage your farm input costs? Please highlight some methods.

The methods I used are: reduce costs, increase profits. Staying connected with agricultural scientists and successful farmers is also important. By embracing modern techniques, one can lower the input costs, and by doing so, farmers can significantly boost their income. Also, farming is not just about following old methods; it's about evolving with the times and finding new ways to thrive.
