Here are the top global news from last week.

Typhoon slams southern Japan; evacuations underway

Nine million is the expected number of people who will have to evacuate their homes as Japan is hit by one of the worst typhoons seen in the country to date. Super typhoon Nanmadol has already killed two and injured almost 90, with over 350,000 homes without power. 

Atmospheric and oceanic phenomena La Niña is responsible for a huge global natural disaster, including typhoon Nanmadol. 

Hundreds of flights canceled, and transport services along with businesses have been disrupted. 

The typhoon is still passing through Japan, our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by the storm. 

Iconic Oktoberfest returns to Munich

Oktoberfest was the world’s largest Volksfest (german folk festival), and featured a beer festival and huge celebrations; that is until Covid-19 shut it down. Now, after two years, it finally marks its return, after being announced by Munich mayor Deiter Reiter on April 29, 2022. 

Beer has cult status in German culture, and Oktoberfest is an integral part of Munich culture, first starting in 1810 

The festival kicked off on September 17, with Reiter tapping the first keg. The festival will run from the 17th to October 3rd. 

Flooding in Italy kills 10, and survivors take to roofs as they await rescue

Flash floods hit central Italy near Cantiano by overnight torrential rains which exceeded expectations and led to flooding and trapped cars. 

Around 40 cm or 15.75 inches of rain fell within three hours, which is a third of the usual yearly rainfall. 

Paola Pino d'Astore of the Italian Society of Environmental Geology said the floods were due to climate change and were not easy to predict; “It is an irreversible phenomenon, a taste of what our future will be”

Recovery efforts are underway currently.

US media hails PM Modi’s remarks to Putin on the Ukraine war

In a widely publicized conversation between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin, American media praised Modi for telling Putin that this is not the right time for war. 

Modi reportedly told Putin “Today’s era is not an era of war, and I have spoken to you on the phone about this”

This was the lead story in both The Washington Post and The New York Times, prominent newspapers in American media.  

Afghan girls excluded from high schools; UN: ‘shameful’

The UN denounced the exclusion of girls from high school. António Guterres, the secretary-general of the United Nations, tweeted out “Sunday marks one year since girls were banned from attending high school in Afghanistan.

A year of lost knowledge and opportunity that they will never get back.

Girls belong in school. The Taliban must let them back in.” 

Since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in the summer of 2021, more than a million girls have not been allowed to attend high school.
