29 August - National Sports Day
National Sports Day is celebrated on August 29 every year to honour the birthday of Dhyan Chand a field hockey player. National Sports Day is also known as Rashtriya Khel Divas. The highest honour in Indian sports is named after Dhyan Chand. The award is called "Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award."

In 1922, Dhyan Chand enlisted the British Army as a 'sepoy.' After playing hockey for the army exclusively (from 1922 and 1928), he represented India after hockey was reintroduced in the Olympics (at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics). On India’s world tour of 1932, he scored 133 goals.

Chand's brother and father were also established hockey players. He has a record of 400 goals throughout his career in international matches.

The legend (also known as the 'Wizard') passed away on December 3, 1979 , at the age of 74.
