Borgohain had a close match against Nadine Apetz of Germany in the Round of 16. She successfully finished it at 3-2, confirming her Quarterfinal 2 match against Nien-Chin Chen of Taipei.

The thrilling scuffle between both the ladies went toe to toe. This was evident from the split decision by the judges in the first round.

For most of the game, Chen was on the defending end while Borgohain showered her punches. There were numerous body shots from India which resulted in timeout more than twice. Chen had to tug in her shirt twice in two rounds as it kept getting dragged out from the continuous shots from Borgohain.

The split decision did not trouble Borgohain as she was on the side of the majority from the first round. The final scores were announced 4-1 in favor of Borgohain in the red shirt.

The match was crucial as winning it secured the second medal for India. After Mary Kom’s defeat yesterday in the Women’s Fly category, India lost hope for any medals in Boxing. Borgohain, who belongs to the same northeast, denied facing defeat and hopelessness and brought in the second medal for the nation. Moreover, there is always a chance for silver or even gold.

Borgohain had to settle with Bronze in AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship and 2020 Asia and Oceania Olympic Qualifiers. Here is a chance for the Arjuna Award winner to cross the bronze line.

Lovlina Borgohain will be facing Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey in her Semi-Finals.
